Uncover Lake Garda’s Mystery Name

Long before it was called Lake Garda, this sparkling stretch of water was known as Benaco. The name dates back to Roman times—and likely
even earlier, to the Celtic and Rhaetian peoples who first lived along its shores. The Romans adopted it as Lacus Benacus, a name celebrated
by poets like Virgil, who was born nearby.

Lake Garda becoming “Lake Garda”

The meaning of Benaco remains a little mysterious. Perhaps referring to water, depth, or the horn-like shape of the lake. Over time, the name Garda became more common, yet Benaco has never disappeared. Today, it lingers in literature, local lore, and the timeless memory of the lake itself.

To honor this enduring beauty, we have named our most unique lakefront room with a frontal water view “Benaco.” Here, guests can enjoy
the lake’s magic up close, and feel a connection to centuries of history, quiet moments, and countless journeys.
